How about a snake charmer, a monkey trainer, a white camel, a ice cream cone man, a henna lady, belly and candelabra dancers, stiltwalkers, green-robed women singers and white-robed musicians in yellow, pointed slippers, welcoming guests into the night’s backdrop for weddings and celebrations.
Under torchlight, white robed male musicians with trumpets and drums, sing low-toned rhythmic melodies, call and respond, and clap with hands and finger-cymbals welcome the guests to the long red carpet on the narrow alley, gawked at by residents peeping from doorways. Perfumed water bless the guests as they enter the courtyard to dine under the moon and stars.
Royalty and movie stars hang out in Dar Yacout’s 30-year-old private salons with fireplaces and hidden corners with carved cedar ceiling. From the rooftop can be seen the medina and the towering Koutoubia Mosque.
Two candelabra dancers with lighted candles on their head, and two belly dancers glide around the guests dining around the red petals-covered tables topped with crystal globlets. Moroccan gastronomic cuisine - bread, salad, tangine lamb, is individually served.
An hour’s drive and 30 kilometres south of Marrakesh is the Agafay luxury camp in a stony desert, with white sand dunes, a train of camels, and unattended all-terrain vehi-cles. Guests enjoy the bumpy US$35 an hour camel ride for free until it was too dark for others to follow.
Candles brighten up the open tent scattered with giant throw pillows around low tables on white carpets as the sun sets. Red-fez wearing waiters in white long sleeves shirts and black trousers from White Camel Lodge caterers individually serve the cross-leg-seated guests.
A basket of Moroccan bread, a round flattish loaf, dense and hard, goes with the tastiest lamb tangine, a stew with apricots, raisins, flaked almonds and saffron cooked slowly in a shallow earthen pot with a cone-shaped lid called the tangine.
Belly dancers and a fire dancer light up the night. Musicians beat the drums, tambou-rines and finger cymbals, and lend their headgears to dancing guests.
This incredible journey and charming and luxurious hospitality, steps away from the best of Marrakesh’s historic wonders, is worth retelling as a modern Scheherazade tale.
